SYDNEY BOUND: St Catherine’s girls’ side will compete for the State title in Sydney on August 5 following last week’s successful tournament.

St Catherine’s continued to showcase its bevy of junior Aussies Rules talent last week when its girls side secured a second straight Hunter regional final victory at the Paul Kelly Cup tournament.

The well drilled unit dismantled Biddabah 9.6 (60) to 1.1 (7) before keeping both Tomaree and Dudley scoreless in their respective 82-point and 51-point victories.

ZONE WINNERS: St Catherine's commenced its 2019 campaign by dismantling Singleton Heights in the Zone finals of the competition in May.

“They were very skillful and pulled off some great set plays,” coach and teacher Patrick Fitzgerald explained.

Best: Molly Thomas, Alex Neyland and Ella McLeod.

The junior boys also defeated St Mary’s, Warners Bay 5.3 (33) to 3.1 (19) and St Michael’s, Nelson Bay 5.2 (32) to 3.1 (19).

However they would be unable to match Dudley in the final. Best: Nic Horsburgh, Damien Stafa and Sam Broughton.

“They were three very tough games so it was a great effort to be Hunter runners up,” Fitzgerald added.

The girls side will now travel to Sydney’s Spotless Stadium for the state finals on Monday August 5.
